Sara* learned of an evangelism based church planting –– training being offered while attending her local church in the Caribbean. The year-long training would be held on the first four Saturdays of each quarter in the capital city located several hours from her home town. She had a deep desire to take this training and volunteered to be a delegate from her local church.
Sara worked on the night shift as a nurse at the local hospital. She made arrangements for someone to cover her work shift on Friday night and would hitchhike to the capital during the night to attend the training on Saturday. She would participate in the training and then hitchhike to her home to be back at her local church on Sunday.
She began to train those in her local church using the training she received. During this time different OMS teams and missionaries were privileged to prayer walk the area with the believers. They had twenty-six new groups in the area surrounding Sara's home town in a matter of months.
The local church became a training center the following year for those living even farther out from the capital city. Sara quit her job to devote herself to training at the center. This resulted in more groups established in outlying areas and the local church growing in members and expanding the size of the building.
An OMS group visited a further outlying city in 2013. Travel took a full day because of the lack of transportation and the condition of the roads. The Every Community for Christ (ECC) training center coordinator also traveled to encourage members from that church to participate in the training in Sara's home city. This was a church of forty-eight members and twenty-six signed up for training, including a twelve year old girl! It was obvious it would be very difficult for that many to travel such a great distance. So the question was asked, "Couldn't we become our own training center?"
They would need a professor to come to them for this to happen. Who would do that? Sara felt compassion for them and volunteered to be the professor when she learned of their desire to be trained. She began spending a day hitchhiking to give training and then would hitchhike back to her home. Soon after she started this process she became pregnant, but she continued to travel and do the training.
Many in the country consider this outlying town to be the end of the world. Those who took the training said they were not at the end of the world, but with the training received THEY could reach the end of the world. They have continued the process and reached out beyond their local area to reach more people for Christ.
Over and over Sara exemplified Isaiah 52:7 "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns.'"
