The Grace Evangelical Free Church of Louisville, Kentucky, had the privilege of joining a Men for Missions team to Medellin, Colombia. The call for this trip went out in January. Preparations began with prayer and God provided the opportunity, finances, and training for seven members of Grace, four members of the Sonora Methodist Church of Kentucky, one OMS and two Men for Missions missionaries, thus forming a band of fourteen evangelists.

Men for Missions handled all the arrangements. Each team member received a packet with airline tickets, hotel reservations, and itinerary. Before departure the team was covered in prayer by our congregation and commissioned by the pastor and elders.

Upon arrival we were joyfully met by One Mission Society missionaries Doug and Cindy Tankersley, Richard and Gladys Herrera, ECC Coordinators of the Interamerican Church (IGLEICO), and a team of young energetic translators. They provided a watchful and caring eye over us during our time in Medellin. Our first day was spent worshiping in local churches and meeting the warm, loving members of their congregations. That evening Doug briefed us on what to expect during the door-to-door evangelism adventures and gave us tips on how to use the EvangeCube, a powerful tool for sharing the gospel. We were to train the local church members how to use the cubes in the morning, and in the afternoon, they were to make the presentation. Upon our departure we gave them the cubes so they could continue to evangelize their communities. Along with evangelism, two of our team members provided much needed carpentry work to a local church and pastor’s home.

Anxiety was the “word for the day” the first morning of door-to-door evangelism, but the Lord comforted us with His Word, Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9). We each went out with a local church member and translator to form teams of three as the first day of evangelism began.

As God led us, we shared our testimonies and the Gospel with the people of Medellin.

At the end of the day, each team shared stories of the power of God’s Word in the hearts of many. On the first day, 103 decisions for Jesus were made. This trend continued throughout the week as we also visited the towns of Barbosa and Bello.

A total of 442 people prayed to accept Jesus into their hearts, and before we knew it our time in Colombia had come to an end.

Our hearts where filled with joy for the friends we had made and a bit of sorrow when we had to say goodbye. Each of us was thankful to God to be used as His instruments for the advancement of the Gospel. Richard Herrera has reported that 185 follow up visits where made, 81 people are actively involved in discipleship training, and 22 house churches have been started. In Richard’s words, “To God we give the glory!”
