I love those events in life where we look back and clearly see that the hand of God was at work. We had such an experience during a recent mission trip in Cap-Haitien, Haiti.
The story began a year ago as our church’s mission team was evangelizing in a village near the airport. We stopped at a house where a young man, Leodine, invited us in. We shared the Gospel but he declined to accept Christ.
We also spoke with an older woman who was raising two very sick grandchildren, a boy and a girl, who were abandoned by their mother. We arranged to have them taken to Dr. Rodney’s hospital for treatment. The very next day, Leodine came to the church where we were ministering and asked us to pray with him to receive Christ.
As our team was leaving for the States, Leodine promised he would connect to the church for discipleship and Pastor Etienne said that he would continue to follow up with him.
Fast forward to our church’s recent trip. We continued our ministry with Pastor Etienne, his school, and evangelizing the neighborhood.
The first day at the church we saw a boy and a girl without uniforms or shoes, and we decided to buy them for the children. We asked the pastor to bring the children over so we could meet them.
At the same time, a team member, Darlene, was asking the Lord which child she should support. We asked the girl’s name and the pastor said, “Love Darlene.” Immediately, Darlene said she wanted to support her.
We then needed to introduce Darlene to Love’s parents to explain the support program. We discovered that she was the sick little girl we helped a year earlier! We were excited because we were going to see grandma again and follow up with her and Leodine.
When we arrived at the house, there were now twelve people living there. My wife, Melissa, noticed a young woman holding a baby that was wearing a voodoo necklace. She explained the love and power of God and asked if we could cut the necklace off. The woman agreed, and then said, “I want to have Jesus in my heart.” Melissa prayed with her to receive Christ. I then gave her a 4VEH fix-tuned radio that I had in my backpack – a radio that I had been holding from a year earlier.
We were so excited that this young woman found Christ, but we had no idea of the depth of the miracle. After leaving the house, we learned that she was the wife of a witchdoctor!
The next day the entire household, including the witchdoctor’s wife, came to the church. Then we discovered that one of the women, who lived with grandma, also had a son in the school. He was the other boy who didn’t have a uniform that we wanted to buy one for!
At that point I just had to pause, thank the Lord, and explain the details of how God was working in their household. God’s plan, a year in the making, had come full circle.
