My name is Michael Shaferly, and I live in Findlay, Ohio. I'm an excavating contractor, and I’ve been involved with One Mission Society and Men for Missions all through my life.
My parents were missionaries in Haiti for many years, and I was reared there. Our family was on the receiving end of Men for Missions teams. The involvement with Men for Missions in my adult life came in late 2010 when OMS and MFM started the Homes for Haiti project. Harold Brown asked me to be the coordinator on the ground for the project. Starting in 2011, my family and I went down to Haiti for a year. When our year was up, we felt that God was not asking us to stay so we went back home to the U.S.A. Since then, we have stayed involved in Homes for Haiti and the Bon Repos Project and have made several trips a year, leading teams, and just helping out wherever needed.
I became a Christian as a young child and did well throughout my school years. After high school, I moved out on my own and moved back to the United States. My parents were still living in Haiti. I continued to go to church and read the Bible, but for many years my faith was stagnant without any areas of growth. I was going through life making the motions.
It was about nine years ago that I was sitting in church listening to a message from the pastor, and that message touched my life and made me realize that I needed to make a decision. Was I going to live my life for myself and continue on the way I was, or was I going to fully commit to God and follow His leading in my life? I knew what I needed to do and made that decision. I recommitted my life to Christ and really dove in the deep end. We are grateful to see the changes in my life, in my family's life, in my wife's life since that point. God has really done miraculous things in our lives.
