For the past eleven years, Faith Bible Church, located in Agawam, MA has been hosting a summer Vacation Bible School program. This year’s VBS theme was called ‘Game On’. Along with the typical VBS program of providing thematic games, singing songs, a daily Bible lesson, arts & crafts, and treats, a competition is done amongst all classes that is missions related. This year’s mission outreach competition was to collect pennies from all age groups to purchase Bibles for Cuba.

The pastor’s spouse, Dolores Donofrio, came up with an ingenious object lesson to illustrate to all the children how important and meaningful the Bible is to the Cuba people and yet how scarce Bibles are in that country. She photocopied pages of the Bible and then taped them into her Bible. Dolores then spoke to the children about what Cuba was known for coffee, cocoa, cigars, sugar, tobacco, citrus. Then she asked the children what they thought the Cubans were lacking. The children guessed a few things, but none said Bibles. She held up her Bible and asked the children how many of you have Bibles at home? Most of the kids respond-ed by raising their hands. Dolores told them that most Cubans don’t have a Bible, and she posed the question, “Do you know what Cubans have to do?” She took her Bible and proceeded to rip the pages (photo copies) from her Bible. The children were shocked!!! Their little mouths were wide open!!!

Dolores explained to them that, in Cuba, they do that so they can share portions of the Bible with many people. She suggested to the kids how confusing that would be. They all agreed it would be and that’s why lots of pennies are needed to purchase Bibles to help solve their problem.
Every evening at the opening of VBS program Dolores would ask, “What does Cuba have a lot of?” and the kids would call out different things. Then she would ask, “What doesn’t Cuba have?” And they would scream, “Bibles!” So the object lesson was proven successful in teaching and helping the children understand the need for Bibles in Cuba.
A great amount of pennies were collected over a four day period of VBS. A total of over 43,985 pennies were collected. The total weight came into over 243 pounds! In addition to the pennies collected, the mission’s committee added sufficient funds to purchase 100 Bibles for Cuba.
