For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or need-ing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ — Matthew 25:35-40 NIV
Chicken nuggets, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, pancakes, vegetables, fruit, cereal, and milk are things my children enjoyed growing up. Thankfully my children never faced days of hunger and health related problems due to malnutrition, but in Haiti many families experience these issues. The United States Agency of International Development
(USAID) states, in 2017, 22 percent of Haitian children under five years have a prevalence of stunting and 66 percent of children 6-59 months have a prevalence of anemia due to malnutrition. USAID further explains food insecurity caused by recurrent natural disasters and climate related factors remains a problem in Haiti. In 2017, at the peak of the lean season and the 2017 spring harvest, 3.6 million people were food insecure and 1.5 million were severely food insecure (FAO and WFP 2017).
