An Incredible Adventure

My Journey

By Bill Anderson MFM-UK Associate Staff

I have been involved in Men for Missions since 1978. I got involved because my employer suggested that it was something I should do. We went to a small village where American Harry Burr told us about Men for Missions and what ordinary men can do in extraordinary situations. The thing that really challenged me when listening to Harry Burr speak was that he was a man of great skill and great ability. And yet, he was willing to put that aside and just simply let God use him to reach others. I'll be eternally thankful to Harry Burr for coming to a small town and sharing his passion and his vision for missions. My heart has been involved in missions from then until this present time.

Twelve men became involved in Men for Missions from the meeting with Harry Burr. The first time we went to the mission field was 1978. I always say the twelve men that met that night are still friends. We have had some great missionary adventures as we've been involved in the work of Men for Missions in various countries. One of the great things about being involved in Men for Missions is that it is all about relationships. It gives you a group of people that you can turn to in times of need when you get together, have gone to the mission field, and you made a difference. I've had to go to those friends and ask for prayer and for spiritual support in very difficult situations that we have found in our lives. They have been there for me as I have been for them. It's about relationships more than just being part of an organization. That is the core of Men For Missions.

I grew up in a situation where I never felt worthy of being used for doing anything. I grew up in a very poor family. We were marginalized by the society around us. And yet God took me, marginalized in every way, and used me in a way that I would never have dreamed possible. It's a miracle. There's nothing more that can be said about my journey. It's a miracle to be where I am today.

In my own strength, I would be a total failure. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”(ESV). That's a key verse in my life because my natural reaction was to be fearful of doing something new or different. But when God started to use me, I learned to lean on His direction, His provision, and His encouragement. My personal journey with the Lord and Men for Missions has truly been an incredible adventure.
